Sander van der Waal is research director at Waag. He is responsible for the research agenda, working closely with the heads of the research programs and the leads of the fourteen labs. His goal is to have Waag’s research contribute to positive change: locally in Amsterdam, nationally in the Netherlands, and internationally in the many European partnerships. Sander maintains and develops the network of research partners and represents Waag publicly during debates, events and webinars.
Previously, Sander led the Future Internet Lab, where he worked on the mission of putting human values at the heart of the ways technology and data are designed and rolled out in society, based on Waag’s principles of openness, honesty and inclusivity.
Sander studied computer science and philosophy in Amsterdam, and has extensive experience in open-source software development, open data and open knowledge, and data infrastructures.
