Art-science duo Karen Lancel and Hermen Maat (Studio Lancel/Maat, Amsterdam) are considered pioneers in creating performances and interfaces for social haptics in VR, XR, online and mixed realities, for shared experience of touching and feeling touched. In their internationally presented and awarded works, their audience explores poetic and challenging ‘Trust Rituals’ and ’Trust Systems’, raising personal and ethical questions about intimacy and isolation, identity, empathy, privacy and trust. Lancel holds a PhD at the TU Delft about the question: “Can I Touch You Online?”. Studio Lancel/Maat has initiated an international multi-disciplinary ‘HyperTouching’ platform for co-creation of XR social haptic experience.
